About Me
Hi, I’m Alex Kleinman; a cartoonist, illustrator, and storyteller.
My adventure into the world of cartoons is relatively new… well, maybe not that new. Originally,
I went to school to study marketing. While I enjoyed the experience, I quickly realized it wasn’t for me.
What I really needed was a career full of uncertainty, low pay, and endless criticism, so naturally, I
became an artist.
(Kidding… sort of.)
The Start of My Journey
My path into art began unexpectedly when I was studying motorcycle mechanics in college, yet another career that
wasn’t the right fit. From the start of the program, I knew I needed something different, but I still wanted to stay in
school since education has always been important to me.
That’s when I discovered the Foundation to Art & Design Program at George Brown College. What drew me to it was simple: no prior
art experience required. It was about unlocking your creative potential, and that’s exactly what it did. I learned how
to critique art, draw in different styles, compose images, and develop my creative voice. I thrived in the program, graduating with honors and a new sense of direction.
Discovering Digital Art
After graduating, I applied to George Brown’s Graphic Design Program and was accepted. This is where I discovered
my love for digital art, specifically vector illustration.
While others leaned on Photoshop, I gravitated toward illustration and digital drawing tools. To this day, vector art is
my main medium, though I still sketch concepts by hand before bringing them to life digitally. My style evolved naturally, combining clean, bold visuals with a playful sense of humor.
The Turning Point: Cartooning
Near the end of college, I met a teacher who, let’s just say… wasn’t overly impressed with my hand-drawing or storytelling
skills. He gave me a C+ in drawing, the lowest mark I ever received in school.
As an honor-roll student, that stung. But instead of giving up, I used it as motivation. I enrolled in the school’s Cartooning
Continuing Education Program, which "surprise" was run by the very same teacher.
My goal? To improve, impress him, and prove to myself that I could push my skills further.
That class changed everything. I learned how to tell stories through art, add humor to compositions, and use color palettes effectively. It was the missing piece I didn’t know I needed.
And yes, I impressed the teacher, receiving straight A's.
Where I Am Now
Looking back, I started on the wrong career path, marketing, motorcycle mechanics, you name it. But every detour led me here:
I discovered art.
I fell in love with digital illustration.
I found my passion in cartooning.
And most importantly, I worked my @SS off to get better at it.
Today, I create cartoons and illustrations that combine storytelling, humor, and a distinct visual style. It’s been a long journey, but every misstep brought me closer to finding what I truly love doing.
